The Sound of Silence

A poem by Ted Hughs, recently found in the British Library archive, directly addresses Sylvia Plath, his former wife, & the first emotions upon hearing about her death. His vulnerability, broken structure, & painful images fully capture — in essence — the tangled knot of horror that I first felt when learning of her infamous suicide.  Read this poem.

“To the person in the bell jar, blank and stopped as a dead baby, the world itself is the bad dream.” -Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
